Dziekanowski

Right from the very beginning we knew that Dariusz ‘Jacki’ Dziekanowski was something special. Very special.

After just 35 seconds of his debut, a brilliant pass from the grossly under-rated Mark Gavin split the Southend defence and Jacki exploded onto the ball, rifling a powerful shot goalward that the hapless Sansome was extremely fortunate to block. He continued to dazzle until the 67th minute, when Osman and Bent combined perfectly to feed him and Jacki confidently slotted the ball home for his first goal in the English league.

For someone who’d spent five months in reserve team anonymity at Celtic, Dziekanowski proved before a nationwide TV audience that he’s an immensely gifted player when he marked his FA Cup debut with a goal that helped sink Leicester in the fourth round. On a treacherous skating-rink of a surface, he put on a striking, virtually faultless display of ball-control while others struggled merely to keep their feet. Jacki had arrived…and the entire country knew it.

A new euphoria swept through the city as the nations press talked about the “bargain” of the season, and the cliché, “every time he gets the ball you think something’s going to happen” was born.

Consequently, he often finds himself tightly marked, but even this couldn’t stop the goal-maker from becoming goal-scorer 6 times in 19 appearances. By the time he took to the field against Ipswich, a game which will be remembered forever for his outrageous ‘overhead back-flip’ while on the move at the edge of the box, he was absolutely brilliant.

“I’m not a player who waits in the six-yard box for the ball to come,” he says in English. “I like to go deep, to drop off the defenders. People look at the results and see the name of someone who scored from one yard. Sometimes it’s more important to know who made that goal…and how!”

Let’s hope that now, as Dziekanowski starts his first full season with Bristol City, that he continues the way he started and makes every other team in the country as jealous as all hell at the fact that:

Dziekanowski belongs to Bristol!

And that’s OFFICIAL!
